Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the ability to question certain decisions from the official, echoing the practice already in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
