Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying such drugs must be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a reversion to original mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Experts suggest the way of the jabs accounts for the amplified regain.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a sudden return of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing lifestyle changes.
