Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of access tunnels leading to the site... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike shows British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," he added. "They were among numerous UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an assault killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
